This week 'Swan Upping' - the annual census of the swans on the river Thames - is taking place.

In the twelfth century the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans, but in 1473 the Vinters' & Dyers' Companies were allowed to own swans after a Royal Charter was granted.To organise who owned each swan, the tradition of Swan Upping was started.

Nowadays swans are no longer eaten and the focus of the census is conservation. The swans & cygnets are caught, their health assessed by The Queen's Swan Marker, before being released.

It is also a chance for local school children to come and learn how they can help look after swans and the river.
