Brown Bear rests in salmon stream, British Columbia, Canada – Photo by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho – In late summer, salmon begin to return to their natal streams in force. Healthy rivers, especially in Western Canada and Alaska, can be seasonally clogged with migrating fish, a potential feast that attracts brown bears from all over the region. The ease of catching salmon is such that bears often consume just the skeins of rich eggs in the females, and strip off the fat-laden skin. The rest of the carcass can feed someone else downstream, or decompose, adding nutrients to the entire ecosystem. This handsome bear was taking a break from gorging on salmon, and simply sat down in the shallows with a look of contentment. I don’t often settle for simple portraits, aiming for moments of revealing behavior, but this was a face I could not ignore. @ナショナルジオグラフィック #natgeo #nikon #wildlifephotography #brownbears #faces
