A Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) rests in the midday heat, Madagascar : Photo by Kevin Schafer // @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック The lemurs of Madagascar are unique, with similarities to more familiar primates, but with faces like puppies – that we humans find irresistibly endearing. One of the best known, and most enchanting, of the lemur tribe are the Ring-tails, which inhabit the spiny forests of Madagascar’s arid south. With their sweet faces, and luxuriant coats, they are highly social animals, traveling in large extended family groups. They are easy to see in the private Berenty reserve, and several other locations, but - like most of Madagascar’s endemic animals, the ease of seeing them in a few isolated reserves masks the fact that they remain desperately endangered. For although Madagascar has a fine and vital system of national parks, virtually all the land outside of those protected areas has been deforested. #lemurs #wildmadagascar #berenty #endangeredwildlife
