Mountain hare in mid-air – Come and join me as I spend five weeks photographing these incredible creatures next January and February in Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park. All the packages are extremely flexible and the longer that you stay the cheaper it gets! You can either come and join me for one day, two, three or four as I guide a maximum of two people per day into the mountains to spend time with these most confiding mammals. Some of the sites are as little as a 20 minute walk in as well so it’s suitable for all levels of fitness. If you’re interested then you can email me at tours@andrewparkinson.com I took this image earlier this year, high on a remote plateau and during a rare moment of beautiful evening sunlight. It is of course slightly fortunate to get the hare in mid-air but in these situations I tend to always shoot with my 200-400mm in the mountains as I find it much more responsive when the unexpected happens. I had seen this hare come bounding down the slope and the subtle backlighting makes for quite a high contrast image, ideal for the autofocus to be able to latch on and tenaciously hold focus. Had I been shooting from a tripod and with a bigger lens then I’d probably have been too slow to capture it but the 200-400mm is a lens that I can easily hand-hold allowing me to react very quickly. Of course there is a compromise with the shorter focal length but with such confiding mammals this is rarely a problem and as I spent 27 straight days up in the mountains this smaller lens is also a lot lighter for those repeat journeys.
