It took us until now to finally feel we could almost settle in, where we could relax enough and not question whether or not we needed to be working or checking a to-do list. Yesterday morning we sat here as Adelaide played, and listened to the rough, wind-churned lake hit the shore and the crackle of the fire in the hearth. Later, on the dock, just us two, we spoke about how yes, we overcame and pushed through the work, but that we couldn't ever do that again - not like that. That twenty-two hour days aren't sustainable, and that the sickness at the end was inevitable. But mostly, our hearts just spilled out in their brokenness...because when you're working that hard, there isn't time for self, or marriage, or being a parent. We are wrecked with guilt, and wrecked with taking on too much. It's a strange thing to be so proud of your own hard work, to finish something near-impossible, but then to know you got in over your head too, and that you sacrificed more than you meant to. Our family, our life, ourselves - we are worth more. We have to remember that as we move forward. There wouldn't be a business or a reason to work without one another, our marriage and our life are completely intertwined with the work we do, and that's the reason it's so very special. So here we sit (although today, it's the laundromat in town), reading and writing and taking breaks to just look at one another or share with one another, in hopes we can heal.
