Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan cygnet on her mothers’ back – This is another image from my time spent with the infant cygnets last year when I spent all day every day with them for a few weeks from the day that they hatched. This image is a vertical, taken with an 80-200mm lens, handheld and with me standing directly over the top of the adult female. To be trusted with this level of intimacy took a huge investment of time but if anything is my photographic hallmark then this type of work typifies it. When I work with a subject then I tend to work with it to the exclusion of all else, especially if I am trying to produce a certain type of image or a certain standard of work. The only way that I could have been trusted with such a close approach is if the adult swans trusted me implicitly and I hope that the blissed-out look on this cygnets face is a testament to just how relaxed both she and the adult female swan was. I personally really like a lot of these images that I produced last summer, if only because I know of no other image that has been taken in this way and with this subject. This is understandable as mute swans are such ferociously protective parents and will give such short shrift to anything or anyone that might come too close, or pose a potential threat to their precious babies. During the whole time that I was taking these images I was talking to the adult swans, always in the same monotone voice that I’d used in the weeks preceding the youngsters hatching, as I sought to make them both familiar with my presence and my voice. Though I’d hoped to work with them again this summer I simply wasn’t able to commit the same investment of time and as I was unable to commit to this I saw little point in producing what would have been the poor relation to what I’d produced the previous year. Hopefully next year I will.
