Photo by @amivitale. Pokot, standing outside the enclosures at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), is under the care of wildlife keepers from the local community. With care and luck, in a few years he’ll be weaned and released to live among the wild herds of northern Kenya. Reteti is part of the Samburu-owned Namunyak Community Conservancy. The first-ever community-run elephant sanctuary in Northern Kenya, the people here truly understand how important elephants are to their landscape. Their goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and reintroduce orphaned or abandoned elephant calfs into the wild. In a world of seven billion, it is the people closest to the land who hold the key to saving what is left.
