California Gull on a protein diet, Mono Lake, California – Photo by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – Every summer, the saline waters of Mono Lake support an enormous bloom of brine flies, probably numbering in the billions of individual flies. Swirling masses of them seem to line the lake’s shoreline for miles. This sudden explosion of potential food is nearly irresistible to the lake’s resident California Gulls, for whom the clouds of flies seem an easy source of high-protein food. You would think all they’d have to do would be to run through the mass of flies with their beak open, and eat to their heart’s content. Not so much: the flies manage to avoid the charging birds pretty well, and one has to wonder how efficient it is for the gull to go to all that trouble for a few measly flies from each plunge. Efficient or not, it is great fun to watch. Less fun to sit in the middle of a teeming fly-cloud for several days trying to get pictures. #monolake #flyfeast #proteindiet #easternsierra
