@KyleAbrahamMT set out to make a dance about love, but he should have known better: His favorite band is @thesmiths_, and “Dearest Home,” his new work at @thekitchen_nyc beginning today, inevitably went to a darker place. “The person I was thinking I was going to marry — that’s over,” he said. Worse, his mother died. And during an @Abrahaminmotion residency for “Dearest Home,” Prince died. “The first dance I ever made — which was to show my parents that I wanted to go to a dancing school — was to Prince,” said @KyleAbrahamMT, a MacArthur Fellow. This intimate, spare duet in @KyleAbrahamMT’s look at love and loss refers to his breakup. “It’s performed in the round, and that adds a certain vulnerability,” said the dancer @cat_kirk. “There’s no exit, so it’s very exposed, which feeds into the hardships that people go through in relationships — the conversations that are hard to swallow.” As @Marcella_Lewis told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk, “It’s such an honest piece -- it can get pretty emotional.
