The artist @asmkobayashi has a fondness for “lost, discarded and donated objects,” as she puts it. Aware of her interest, friends of friends passed along a wire recorder — a clunky predecessor to the tape recorder — that came with 2 reels’ worth of chitchat. “Listening to the tape, I was immediately in love with the family and knew I wanted to do something,” @asmkobayashi said. After months of sleuthing, she figured out she’d been listening in on the Newburges from Woodmere, New York, captured on 2 separate occasions in the 1950s. The older son in the Long Island family, David, was the recorder’s owner — he held onto it until his death in 2007. Now @asmkobayashi has turned her investigation into an Off Off Broadway solo show, the gently humorous, enchantingly quirky @saysomethingbunny. “Alison should really be working for the FBI,” said Larry Newburge, David’s younger brother. At 78, he’s the only person from the recordings still alive. David was “always enamored of theater,” Larry said. “If he were alive, he would be absolutely in seventh heaven at what these kids have done.” @vincenttullo photographed @asmkobayashi with the wire recorder in New York.
