The violent blaze burned for more than 3 days, killing more than 60 people in the wooded landscape and leaving deep wounds in the tightknit agricultural communities of central Portugal. The inferno, the country’s worst in decades, may have been ignited by a lightning strike or perhaps set deliberately. Officials don’t yet know for sure. The government has ordered an investigation, but the uncertainty over the cause has fueled conspiracy theories and raised doubts over whether the authorities responded quickly enough. Residents say they didn’t receive clear instructions about whether to stay put and protect their homes or escape the flames. “They were alone and didn’t know what to do,” said Diogo Quevedo, 26, whose mother died in the fire. “Those who stayed lived, but those who left died.” Our staff photographer Tyler Hicks photographed this burned house in Vila Facaia, Portugal.
