I touched on this briefly before but I figured we would dive in and take a closer look! Some of my clients are shocked that that they get to eat white rice and potatoes because they're so used to the evil stigma attached! Because most Americans eat the highly processed version of the white potato (french fries and potato chips) consumption of it has been linked to obesity and an increased diabetes risk. On the other hand, sweet potatoes, which are typically eaten whole, have been celebrated for being rich in nutrients and also having a lower glycemic index.
-
? NEWS FLASH: BOTH are good for you, both have great nutritional benefits and one isn’t necessarily ‘better’ than the other.
-
Sweet potatoes do contain more fiber and vitamin A, BUT white potatoes are higher in essential minerals, like iron, magnesium, and potassium. As for the glycemic index, sweet potatoes are lower on the scale, but baked white potatoes typically aren’t eaten plain and the toppings all contain fat, which lowers the glycemic index of a meal.
-
☝?The bottom line: instead of choosing one or the other incorporate BOTH into your diet and be cautious of the way you prepare them! The form in which you consume a potato—for instance, a whole baked potato versus a processed potato that’s used to make chips—is more important than the type!
