Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, has long attracted commuters with its highly rated public schools and proximity to the city. Its small-town vibe, with downtown streets lined mostly with small businesses, is also part of the appeal. But film and TV producers, are attracted to the village for other reasons: They see a setting just generic enough to defy geography and time, able to stand in as Anytown, USA, whether it be for a car commercial or for a TV show set in Brooklyn. Village officials say that, in the past couple of years, Hastings has made about $125,000 from production permits. But the increase in filming has not come without headaches. Residents complain of closed streets and precious parking spaces being hogged by production vehicles, and business owners worry that interruptions keep away customers. But even with the inconveniences, plenty of residents find a certain “cool factor” that comes with being in the spotlight. Many can tick off the productions they remember seeing around the village: @thegirlonthetrainmovie, @divorceonhbo, “The Leftovers.” Last year, a scene in an episode of @girlshbo was shot at Hastings Center Restaurant. 2 waitresses told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ of their complaint: “They didn’t use us.” @edu_bayer took this photo at Hastings Center Restaurant earlier this month.
