#SpeakingInDance | “My solo is basically about feeling like the world is crushing you, but overcoming it,” said the flex dancer @queensuzieq__. #Flexing, a Brooklyn dance form with roots in Jamaica, is expressed through its own vocabulary of moves — like snapping, gliding and bone-breaking. In the flex world Shelby Shellz Suzie Q Felton is an anomaly: She’s a woman. But in the show “Flexn Evolution,” at @parkavearmory this week, she stands out for more than her gender. Shelby, who moves like silk, specializes in “get low,” which means that many of her moves hover near the floor. There’s a sense of hopelessness at the start of her solo, set to @rihanna’s “Sledgehammer.” (Play it while you watch this dance!) As Shelby told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk, “You have to find that inner strength to break through every day.” @reggrocc, a director of the show, described her movement: “With her lines and the beauty of how she pushes out, it’s a whole other way of looking at flexing. Flexing is about being different. She embodies that.” @adamgolfer made this video for our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
