Yesterday, the photographer @jacksonkrule visited Kiryas Joel, a village north of New York City that is home to a large community of Ultra-Orthodox Satmar Hasidic Jews. The occasion: Lag b'Omer, a holiday that marks the anniversary of the death of Simeon Bar Yochai, a 2nd-century rabbi believed to have written the central book of Kabbalah. The Kiryas Joel community started hosting its own Lag b'Omer celebration 17 years ago; this year, tens of thousands of men, women and kids attended. Earlier in the day, @jacksonkrule watched as men prepared a bonfire inside Kiryas Joel’s main square. At 6:30 p.m., men began to flow into the square and women stood on the other side of the street, blocked off by a gate. Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum was ushered to a platform to light the bonfire. As the flames caught, the crowd erupted in cheers. Follow @jacksonkrule to see more photos from the #LagbOmer celebration in #KiryasJoel.
