“Fred is 15 years old and 80 pounds, and since my parents adopted him 2 years ago, he has never left this yard,” @hanyayanagihara writes in this week’s @nytmag. Fred, a sulcata tortoise, was an impulse purchase ($250, from a man living nearby), whose consequences — as with all impulse purchases — were not quite fully imagined. The writer’s parents are 71 and 69; she is 42. Tortoises, however, can live 150 years. Fred, therefore, will most likely outlive not only @hanyayanagihara’s parents but her as well. “To be in the company of a tortoise,” she writes, “is to be reminded — instantly, inarticulably — of the oldness of the world and the newness of us.” They are “unique and unsettling animals to live with,” she explains, “for to be around them is to be reminded, incessantly, of our own vulnerability — and our own imminent deaths.” @spencer_lowell took this photo of Fred munching on a red hibiscus flower, his favorite snack, while on assignment for @nytmag in suburban #Honolulu.
