In September 2013, #nytopinion began an experiment. They sent reporters across New York City to find college students, new to the city, who would agree to be photographed twice: Once, during their first week of school and then again at the end of their freshman year. #nytopinion wanted to see the difference time would make. They published those pictures and a little bit of each student’s story in 2014. 4 years later, in the weeks before graduation, 9 of the students sat for us again. Ololade Oguntayo, pictured here, was a freshman at @fitnyc when @chadbatka took this portrait of him in 2013. (Swipe left to see @chadbatka’s 2nd portrait of Ololade, taken 4 years later.) Ololade told #nytopinion that he left @fitnyc before his 2nd year began but stayed in NYC, working a variety of jobs in retail, magazines and fashion. “I discovered these bars, where I discovered people that were just like me. Wait, so I’m not a freak?” he said. “And they became like my family.” Ololade has also recently started performing in drag, under the name Laé DuBoi. “That character, I’m so confident I feel so invincible.” Visit the link in our profile to see and hear from 9 New York City freshmen, 4 years later.
