Photo by Kevin Schafer - @schaferpho - Every summer, Beluga Whales gather in the shallow rivers around Canada’s Hudson Bay to breed; I took advantage of this to try to photograph these small white cetaceans in the wild. Although they were abundant, my slipping into the water next to them didn’t work well; they often spooked and swam off. But I quickly discovered that if I leaned over the side of my Zodiac, they often approached very closely, often passing within a meter or less. In fact, these whales are swimming on their backs, looking up from directly below me. It felt like a meeting of ambassadors from different worlds, making contact without fear or antagonism.Too often the contact between humans and animals is fraught with fear or hostility - not this time. #beluga #underwater #wildlifeambassador
