Photo by @migeophoto // My lovely friend Mateo is about to get his Ph.D in Spanish & Renaissance studies and asked if I could turn him into a painting. After studying the hands, symbolic props, and light, we were able to bring this dream to life. Here is a quick guide to our photo/painting: The cup represents fate, the grapes a symbol for Bacchus or Christian symbol for blood of Christ & charity, the book, a 19th-century edition of Don Quixote illustrated by Gustave Doré represents learning, the skull is a mementori mori, the globe represents worldliness, and the pear has been many things including: a symbol of incarnate Christ, or it takes the place of the apple as the fruit of the tree of knowledge, or in China, a symbol of immortality. The hat is for the doctoral degree is called a tam; the blue of the hood for doctors in Philosophy, and the robe itself indicates a doctor (the three stripes on the sleeve) and from Yale (the blue).
