Mountain hare portrait – During my month long trip to work with mountain hares recently I had the pleasure of guiding a great many people into the hills to experience these extraordinary creatures. At one particular site that we’d visit the numbers of hares were extremely high and on every visit we’d leave with a great many images. On this particular day myself and good friend Elliot @thewildlifejournals were beginning to make our way down when we noticed a hare sitting close by the path that we were descending. Dropping instinctively to our knees to lower our profile and reduce our human form it was immediately apparent that the hare was completely unfazed by our sudden presence. She seemed to be sitting in a little hollow and as we began to work with her we slowly moved around, trying to find an angle that worked favourably. In the end we did and almost full 360⁰, so cluttered was the grassy home that she’d chosen. In these circumstances it’s always a case of deciding whether the background adds or detracts from the image and the odd stray piece of grass poking out of the snow seemed to work against the compositions. After some time we finally found an angle where we could exclude all of the clutter and produce a nice clean image and it was at this moment that the hare, who’d watched patiently as we slowly completed a full 360⁰, suddenly decided to look at us like we’d beamed down from another planet. This it seems is just something that they do and it never ceases to amuse me, so comical is the expression on their beautiful faces.
