As the popularity of winter sports explodes in China, spurred by its designation as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics, ski tour companies have begun operating in the northern tip of the Xinjiang region. This remote area may have been the birthplace of skiing — or so cave paintings in the Altai Mountains suggest. The arrival of businesses looking to capitalize on this newfound history would be an economic boon to Xinjiang, one of the poorest parts of China, but the possibility of cultural appropriation has traditional skiers nervous. “They are very worried about getting exploited,” said Nils Larsen, an American ski historian, writer, and documentarian who has made 10 trips to #Xinjiang since 2005. At the same time, young men have been leaving Khom, a town not far from the cave paintings, for economic opportunities in far-off city centers. Their departure has left behind a troublesome age gap. “Less and less people are skiing, and less and less are teaching their kids to ski,” Nils said. The photographer Garrett Grove took this photo last year of residents of Khom celebrating the Nauryz holiday, which arrives with the vernal equinox.
