Residents of Khom, in China’s northern Xinjiang region, celebrating the Nauryz holiday. A cave painting found nearby may indicate that skiing originated in China. The International Ski Federation has said that a ski found in Russia is the oldest scientifically dated evidence of skiing in the world, and Norwegian cave paintings depicting skiers dating to 4,000 BC are considered evidence of an early ski culture with Scandinavian roots. But the paintings found in Xinjiang’s Altai Mountains are believed to be far older — 2,000 years older than the next earliest ski artifact on record. Some historians are skeptical, but the deeper battle over the sport’s origins is already being waged within China’s own borders. It’s a struggle marked by fears that ethnic minorities like the Mongols and Kazakhs, who’ve long lived in the these mountains, will have their way of life choked off by encroaching modernity — and the country’s ethnic Han Chinese majority.
