Emma Morano was 117 years, 137 days, 16 hours and some minutes old — in fact, the oldest person in the world — when she died peacefully on April 15. She was 102 the last time she left her apartment in Verbania, a small town on Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region of Italy. In 2015, when Emma sat for this portrait taken by @alessandro.grassani, she told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ that she credited her longevity to her lack of a husband and a diet that included raw eggs. Her “simplicity is sculptural” — and out of step with modernity, the Rev. Giuseppe Masseroni said at her funeral this week. The few worldly possessions Emma left behind didn’t take up much space in her tiny church-owned apartment, which the photographer @giannicipriano visited this week. In her kitchen: a jar of grapes with grappa and sage, and portraits of herself in her younger days. Next to her bed, Emma kept photos of her parents and siblings along with some religious images and rosaries. She also had a photo of her only child, a son who lived from January to August 1937. That photo was buried with her. Swipe left to see more by @giannicipriano.
