Photo by @jodicobbphoto. “Sing sing” dancer, Papua New Guinea, 1998. // In advance of Earth Day, the glorious sight of the Papua New Guinea “sing sings” reminds us of how far from the natural world so much of the globe has drifted. There are over 800 distinct language groups on the island, and these communities have lived for hundreds of years with their unique history, knowledge and cultural practices. But they were often at war with each other, and the sing sings were organized by the government in 1957 in an attempt at pacification—with mixed results. Some kind of body paint has been used by every culture on earth since the beginning of time, and in Papua New Guinea each group has distinct costumes and adornment—but all originate from the natural world surrounding them. The earth, the sea, the birds. . . all feature beautifully in their self-presentation, both at the sing sings and in daily life. From my archives, photographed for a @ナショナルジオグラフィック article on #beauty and what it means in various cultures around the world. For more photographs of world cultures please visit me @jodicobbphoto.
