Classic Week is heating up! Don’t be fooled for a second by these elegantly-clad creatures! This scene is all about love and its accompanying passions, and would have raised pulses in the 18th-century as much as the work of #JohnCurrin does today. Part of a series of four canvases depicting the seasons for his first major commission, Lancret’s Autumn comes to Christie’s from the collection of Chauncey D. Stillman, whose philanthropic foundation its sale will benefit. Two of the canvases from this series are now in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg – “like” if you think this masterpiece will one day make its way into a great public institution, too!
