As one of the fathers of the #Egyptian modern art movement, Mahmoud #Said is able to transport the viewer back in time. Never previously exhibited, this exquisite #portrait is one of the finest by the artist ever to appear on the market. The sitter, a relative of Said, was Madame Ferdous – whose name means ‘#Paradise’ in Arabic –a pioneering and independent woman who was one of the leaders of the humanitarian organisation Red Crescent in #Egypt. Her beauty is unmistakably Egyptian, depicted with characteristic full lips, high cheekbones and dusky skin, and imbued with a serene yet sensual sense of magnificence. Said’s masterful grasp of #light is particularly evident in the distinctive luminosity of her skin. The sumptuous background encapsulates all the components of Said’s celebrated #landscapes – from the #boats on the #Nile to the traditional buildings.
