Garrett Gremes and Kelby Forbes, agents with the United States Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector Horse Unit, searched for illegal border crossers in La Grulla, Texas. Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. has spent over $100 billion on border security technology. But in the thicket along the Rio Grande, where smugglers can easily hide, the #horse patrol unit plays an essential role in efforts to detect illegal activity. Horses have been used for border security since the inception of the #BorderPatrol in 1924, but this unit was established in 2011. Today it has almost 40 horses, obtained from a wild mustang program run by the federal Bureau of Land Management (@mypubliclands). While the flow of migrants has slowed, drug smuggling remains constant. The signs are everywhere: Dozens of footprints, abandoned life jackets, swimming trunks and food wrappers appear along the riverbank. Watch our #InstagramStory to see more photos by @heislerphoto.
