An iceberg glows like a blue sapphire in Scoresby Sund, a large fjord system in East Greenland. Icebergs are the perfect metaphor for the
sea, only a fraction is visible to our human eye. Descending into the a garden of icebergs is like descending into a gallery of ice sculptures, each vastly different. They can be smooth, pitted,
tunneled, and with colors ranging from electric blue to bright white. The shifting ice creates an underwater symphony of thunderous cracks, thuds and hisses. It is hard to fathom that this beauty is created from the ugly and too rapid retreat of Greenland glaciers. Greenland, once an almost mythical hard-to-get-to place in my mind is very real and important place for us to record climate change in real time. The Greenland Ice cap is the second largest body of ice in the world now experiencing record melt in a warming atmosphere. This photograph was made during Elysium Artist for the Arctic Expedition: a collaboration of 65 photographers, filmmakers, writers, poets, musicians, scientists and artist from 19 countries on 1 mission: to create a body of work in the form exhibitions, books and films that connect all of us and the choices we make to the Arctic.
