Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan family at dawn – It always fascinates me how different photographers see the world differently and what it is exactly that they look for in their images. Sometimes I feel like I’m a bit of a ‘neat freak’ when it comes to my own images as whenever I’m in a situation such as this I am always waiting for the moment of what I’d call natural order, in this case when both the adult swans head positions echo each other. It’s kind of strange that I’m like this at all because in every other aspect of my life I’m chaotic and maddeningly disorganised, just ask my wife, and my office at home constantly looks like it’s been burgled! Yet with my photography I do like everything to be just so. Of course I never limit myself in that regard and I love the natural chaos of looking down precipitous cliffs at a circling gannets over raging seas but even then I always try to shoot only when the gannets are in specific positions. In this regard I was recently paid a very kind compliment by all round top fella and legendary underwater photographer @alexmustard1 who said to me recently that ‘I can always tell when it’s one of your images as they’re always very complete’. It’s always fascinating to hear the opinion of other photographers, especially about one’s own work, as we all view the world so differently and so often we will produce wildly differing images in similar situations. So how would you define your own style and what is it that you seek out when you’re photographing? I’d love to hear your thoughts as to me my strive for composition somehow just feels like it’s inbuilt, it feels so instinctive to frame in a certain way. It’s not necessarily how I see the world but it certainly seems that that’s how I want to reflect it photographically. Actually, listening back to what I just wrote sounds a bit worrying, I think I might need therapy!
