Photo by Jeff Gusky - @hiddenwwi// Thousands of French soldiers found shelter in this 1,200 meter long railway tunnel. On September 4th, 1916, a pack mule loaded with supplies was standing near a cook stove located close to one of the entrances to the tunnel when a hot ember accidentally lit the supplies on the mule's back on fire. The frightened mule ran directly into the tunnel and a stock pile of gasoline containers which exploded. The air currents of the tunnel transformed the explosion into a fire storm. Hundreds of young men lost their lives. Five hundred young men were incinerated with not a trace of their bodies ever found.
While this photograph was being taken in 2011, my friend Iain McHenry had walked alone deep into the darkness of the tunnel. Iain was a Royal Military Policeman who has experienced combat first hand and has nerves of steel. He returned from his walk into the tunnel quite startled. He said that he felt an intimidating presence approach him and then experienced being touched on one of his shoulders.
Iain is a noted author, battlefield scholar and a top WWI guide. #history#hiddenwwi #wwi#hi dden #smithsonian #europe #france
