“A month after deciding I wanted to be a photographer, I was off to Africa for my first overseas trip. Some friends invited me to tag along and bring my camera. I had no idea what I was doing. But I fell in love with the idea that I could use a camera to tell stories and to help people. That first trip changed me forever. I think about the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve had on a daily basis. Some would say 'it’s useless to be another guy with a camera overseas. It doesn’t help anything.' Oh, I beg to differ. The stories I’ve heard in the last decade of how photography has affected them are endless. I’ve had people tell me they’ve adopted their child after seeing photos from overseas. I did a book called “Hope in the Dark” in 2006 and colleges around the world have emailed me, telling me they use it in their curriculum to teach other students how photography can make a difference. I also started a non-profit called “Help-Portrait” where we give free photos to people in need all over the world. People with no access to good cameras or nice printers. We’ve now done nearly half a million portraits in over 70 countries. The stories from Help-Portrait are also endless. Communities have been established across cultural boundaries. People have seen their own faces for the first time in third world countries. People have gotten jobs using their new portraits as their head shots. It’s truly mind-blowing what a simple portrait can do for someone.” - #CanonExplorerOfLight @jeremycowart Camera: #Canon EOS 5D Mark II Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Aperture: f/1.6 ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/200 sec Focal Length: 50mm
