Photograph by @jodymacdonaldphoto // The Alaska Range is a relatively narrow, 400-mile (650-kilometer) mountain range in south-central Alaska. The mountains act as a high barrier to the northward flow of moist air from the Gulf of Alaska, and thus have some of the harshest weather in the world. The high levels of precipitation contribute to many lakes and streams like the ones seen here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. These rivers and lakes are home to the spawning grounds for countless types of freshwater species.
