Photograph by @alextreadway // Inle Lake in Myanmar supports about 70,000 people, some of whom live on the waters in stilt houses and grow food in floating gardens. It contains a number of endemic fish species, nine of which are found nowhere else in the world. The floating garden beds are formed by extensive manual labor. Gathering lake-bottom weeds by boat from the deepest parts of the lake, the farmers make floating beds in their garden areas, anchored by bamboo poles. These gardens rise and fall with changes in the water level, and are resistant to flooding. The constant availability of nutrient-laden water results in the gardens being incredibly fertile.
