In the centenary year of the artist’s death, drawings by the French master, Edgar Degas, will be offered on 23 March in Paris.

Born in Paris in 1834, Degas was the eldest of five children of a wealthy banker, who wanted his son to become a lawyer. Degas duly enrolled in law school, but soon dropped out, preferring to enter the famed École des Beaux-Arts in 1855.

His teachers encouraged him to copy the Old Masters at the Louvre and this became a key component of his early practice, with the artist making numerous copies of works by Michelangelo, Raphael and other Renaissance artists.
