Butterfly effect: L’Homme au Papillon is one of the most significant works of Jean Dubuffet’s career. We understand the figure as Dubuffet himself, with his distinctive features and trademark wide-brimmed hat, walking in harmony with a fluttering butterfly. Butterflies were a recurring them for Dubuffet, who often applied their wings directly onto canvases, prefiguring the oeuvre of Damien Hirst by almost fifty years. Painted in 1954, L’Homme au Papillon is formerly from the collection of E.J. Power, perhaps the greatest British collector of the post-war period and Dubuffet’s most important British patron. The painting will be a highlight of our Contemporary Art Evening Sale in #London on 8 March. #SothebysContemporary #Butterfly # JeanDubuffet
