Photo by @jasperdoest // On a local landfill site in Portugal, white storks (Ciconia ciconia) wait for food to be delivered. Landfills have helped revive the the European population of these birds, which was close to extinction at the end of the 20th century due to use of heavy pesticides and habitat destruction. Recent scientific studies have shown that some populations have changed their migratory behavior as the landfill sites provide food 365 days a year. Storks that stay risk being contaminated by heavy metals or choking on rubber bands. However, 21st century migration is also dangerous. In line with European Union mandates, landfills are scheduled to be covered and organic scraps composed. The storks will have to find a new strategy for their survival.
