Spanning two meters in width and height, Spirale I (1997) is half of an outstanding diptych from Günther Uecker’s series of nail paintings.

Hammered into the canvas with bristling precision, the nails create a dizzying whirlpool of light and shadow. Both Spirale I and its partner, Spirale II (Doppelspirale), are now on view at Christie’s London, King Street.
