Suzie Conn, a longtime advertising executive from Nashville, had never seen an #alpaca when she moved to the country. When she met one, she was instantly smitten — and who can blame her? Now these gentle, fuzzy relatives of the llama are a big part of retirement life for Suzie and her husband, Gary. They started with 2 male pets before they invested in the more expensive females. The Conns sometimes earn a small profit by selling some of their herd, along with the soft alpaca fleece and fleece products. But, Suzie said, “I’m not in it to make money. I’m in it because I like the lifestyle.” So-called hobby, or lifestyle, farms have been sprouting up across the U.S. They’re particularly popular among retirees or people close to retiring who want to remain productive as they age while fulfilling lifelong passions or just tackling new endeavors. Some hobby farmers manage to generate a secondary income. Most, though, are happy to at least save on their grocery bills by raising or growing their own food. @joebuglewicz photographed Suzie with Big Al, one of her 13 alpacas. #alpacahugs
