The city is a concrete jungle, but many New Yorkers have an easy escape – a place to grab a breath of fresh air or check the temperature. This place also happens to be an emergency exit. First built after the 1867 tenement law, NYC fire escapes became a canvas for the virtuosity of local foundry workers. They created ornate objets d’art constructed and molded from wrought and cast iron. Recently, the photographer @george_etheredge walked the streets of the South Bronx to take a closer look up at the fire escapes on buildings like this one.
