We renovated this little rental kitchen of ours on a budget of $800 (with the permission of our awesome landlord). I kept the lower cabinetry intact, and Ellen built a custom cabinet to fill out an empty space between the stove and the cabinets. By pushing the stove over and filling that dead space, we made room for a sliver of functional counter space on the opposite side of the stove, perfect for housing cutting boards, glass canisters, spices, and cookbooks. This also made the stove look purposeful. I took the inexpensive subway tile up two feet from the counter to expand the room and create a dramatic, somewhat European aesthetic. I chose "Hale Navy" from @benjaminmoore for the cabinetry paint, which spoke to the neighborhood we live in and the elegant homes built here. I then added fresh brass pulls from @homedepot to modernize, but not work against, the 1930s cabinets. A new light fixture from Amazon, easy lumber and bracket shelving, butcher block counters, deep sink and a basic faucet from Ikea finished off the kitchen. It's now quite lovely to look at, and has been wonderful to cook in. We took something dated and worn and with only a little cash and some weekends of elbow grease and made it something sweet and cozy and functional, proving great design doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.
