Brian King, left, and David Prowse of @japandroids, the deceptively noisy 2-piece punk band from Vancouver that just released a new album, “Near to the Wild Heart of Life.” ? You’re probably wondering about this photo, though. Yes, the @japandroids are standing in front of a wall of fire. Well, sort of. When our staff photographer @cenicola0 was assigned to photograph @japandroids, he thought fire would make an appropriate backdrop for the rock ’n’ roll band. And so he used a time exposure to make this #fiery portrait. “You open the camera and you keep it open for the entire shoot,” @cenicola0 explained. He dressed in black and turned off the lights in the studio. And then, he said, he “painted the background with fire. Up and down and up and down.” Meanwhile, Brian and David stood still. The first time he did a practice shot, @cenicola0 lit a dish towel on fire. (He used a towel to hold a metal pan, in which he’d placed a burning piece of paper towel.) So when the band came in, he took further precautions. He hosed down the floor “to make it shiny, but also I figured it wouldn't hurt if the floor was all wet,” he said. And while he danced with fire, one bystander waited with a hose while a second held a fire extinguisher. All in a day’s work.
