Indira Islas, who came to the U.S. illegally at age 6, has wanted to be a doctor for almost as long as she can remember. But when she started researching college options, she was distressed by what she found: Her home state of Georgia barred undocumented immigrants from attending its top public universities and charged them out-of-state tuition at all others, and Congress barred her from accessing federal Pell grants, loans, scholarships and work-study jobs — the most common forms of assistance for low-income students. A few days after graduating high school, though, Indira learned about @thedream_us, a philanthropic organization that offers undocumented students full 4-year scholarships to Delaware State University or @easternctstateuniv. She applied to Delaware State and was selected as one of its 34 opportunity scholars. But Indira and her fellow undocumented college students face an uncertain future under the presidency of President @ドナルド・トランプ, who in stump speeches, promised to deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants. “The only way we can fight back is to excel in school,” Indira told @nytmag. She achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average her first semester. @angelastrassheim photographed Indira in her dorm room at Delaware State University.
