Perth, the populous yet isolated capital of Western Australia, is an interesting sprawl of a place, closer to Bali than it is to Sydney and over 1,200 miles from the nearest large city. Its city center certainly offers worthwhile attractions for any budget-conscious traveler, but getting the most out of #Perth means getting outside — that is, exploring its outskirts as well as making the most of its natural surroundings. First stop: the beach. Lucas Peterson (@staletwizzlers), @nytimestravel’s “Frugal Traveler,” recommends visiting in the early morning when the crowds are sparse and the sun isn’t at its strongest. But plan on returning in the evening, too: Perth’s location on the west coast means it boasts the best sunsets Australia has to offer. @aarondowlingphotography photographed this stunning panorama of pink- and blue-streaked sky near the south end of Cottesloe beach.
