On the Lower East Side’s gay arts scene of the 1970s, Robert Mapplethorpe broke out to achieve fame and notoriety. But he had a prolific contemporary: Peter Hujar. “It was easy for the mainstream culture to think of him as ‘the other one,’ or ‘the minor one,’” said Joel Smith, the curator of photography at @themorganlibrary. “He did not have Mapplethorpe’s knack of promoting himself.” Like Mapplethorpe, Peter depicted aspects of gay life and preferred the square format. But his photographs tell different stories. “I think Hujar’s work is psychologically dangerous in that he explored territory more emotionally uncomfortable,” said the photo critic Philip Gefter. 30 years after #PeterHujar died from complications of AIDS, he is finally getting his due. Beginning this month in Barcelona, 160 of his photographs — like this 1917 image, “Cockette John Rothermel in Fashion Pose” — will travel worldwide.
