A picture that would inspire the formation of a park. Having heard incredible stories of a landscape beyond compare, Artist Thomas Moran, and photographer William Henry, joined an 1871 U.S. Geological Survey to document the beauty of the area now known as Yellowstone. One of the more famous paintings by Thomas is called "The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone", and it depicts a similar view of the lower falls of the Yellowstone river. Thomas stood near the exact spot I was standing when making his painting, which was a humbling thought as I took this photo. Thomas' paintings, and Williams' black and white photographs, were used in the report to congress to show the special features of this wild place. The fabled landscapes quickly caught the attention of the American people as well, eventually persuading President Ulysses Grant to establish in 1872 Yellowstone as the first national park. Now that's a picture that is worth a lot more than a thousand words.
