Monster waves can form in special places when winter storms hit the California coast, and one of those hot spots is not far from my home near Santa Cruz. “Mavericks" was a big-wave surfers’ secret for years, but now thousands of spectators gather to catch a glimpse of the super waves that break a mile offshore. Top surfers like Santa Cruz’s Peter Mel compete for glory and risk themselves in the giant green barrels. It’s awesome to watch from a small boat lined up just outside the break.
