Having remained in the same private collection since 1983, a year after it was painted, Gerhard Richter’s Eisberg will now come auction for the first time in our #London Evening Sale of Contemporary Art on March 8.
Landscape has been always been one of Richter’s great preoccupations, but his iceberg paintings hold a special place in his oeuvre. For an artist who so consistently sought to objectively portray everyday nature, these come closest to reflecting the transcendental sublime of the 19th-century German Romantics.
Painted in 1982, soon after his divorce from his first wife Ema, Eisberg can be read as a metaphor for the artist’s self-reflective state of mind at the time, or perhaps even as a meditative allusion to self-portraiture.
