“Ready for the big show,” read the caption published with this @nytarchives photo in 1953. On the morning of January 19, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Patrick A. Burns took this photo of the stand where General Dwight D. Eisenhower would soon be sworn in as the President of the United States. On the front page 2 days later, nytimes reported on President Eisenhower’s “comparatively short, 2,400-word” #Inaugural. He pledged that his administration would “neither compromise, nor tire, nor ever cease” in its quest for peace. The 34th president “laid down a 9-point program to guide the nation’s efforts for world peace,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. The 1953 Inauguration drew the largest crowd in history, at the time: police estimated that 750,000 people attended to celebrate the first #Republican president in the White House since 1933. Follow @nytarchives to see a photo of another historical #Inauguration, and @samuelhodgson to see a photo of the @uscapitol taken today. #Washington
