"You can’t act using your head, you can’t act using your eyes — you can really only act with your torso," said @shyltin, who plays the Sleepwalker in George Balanchine's Gothic one-act "La Sonnambula.” In this @nycballet production, a handsome Poet ends up at a party where he becomes entranced with a beautiful Sleepwalker, who glides across the stage in bourrées, tiny traveling steps that give the illusion of floating. Holding a candle with an outstretched arm, she eludes him at every turn. As @chasefinlay told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk: “She doesn’t make eye contact with you. It’s like knowing that there’s something scary there, but you can’t help but want to know what it is.” In the studio, @shyltin said that she never looks in the mirror; it would ruin the effect. “So you have no idea what you look like. You have to just believe it.” And her secret to a great bourrée? “You actually have to relax your ankles,” she said. “That way, you flutter.” @andrewwhitey took this #video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly exploration of dance.
