“I was optimistic enough to hope for the best but realistic enough to prepare for the worst,” the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said on March 22, 1956, after he was found guilty of leading an illegal boycott against the Montgomery city bus lines. He continued: “This will not mar or diminish in any way my interest in the protest. We will continue to protest in the same spirit of nonviolence and passive resistance, using the weapon of love.” That year, nearly all of Montgomery’s 50,000 black residents refused to ride the city buses after #RosaParks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person. Instead, they used a pool of 300 cars organized by the Montgomery Improvement Association, and headed by Dr. King. In late April, the Montgomery City Lines ordered an end to segregated seating on buses, bringing the nearly 5-month-long boycott to a close. Our staff photographer George Tames took this photo of #MartinLutherKingJr and his wife, Coretta, outside the courthouse during his trial. #regram from @nytarchives #MLK #CivilRights
